Join fiber artist Debra Harley as she shares insights from her transformative journey to Lagos, Nigeria, made possible through the Great Meadows Foundation Artist Professional Development Grant. During her April 2026 residency, Harley explored ancient and contemporary Nigerian textile and fashion traditions, gaining firsthand knowledge of hand-dyed, hand-printed, and hand-stitched techniques passed down through generations.
A highlight of her experience was meeting internationally acclaimed textile artist and cultural icon Chief Dr. Nike Okundaye. Through images, stories, and reflections, Harley examines the rich cultural traditions of the Yoruba people and the enduring connections between heritage, creativity, and African textile design. Her work is currently featured in the 2026 Celebrating the Black Experience exhibition at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage.
