The Spiritual Tradition: Faith, Resistance, and Survival – Jubilation! Listening Room Series
October 17 @ 1:00 pm
Jubilation! Listening Room Series
The Spiritual Tradition: Faith, Resistance, and Survival
Born amid the brutality of slavery, the spirituals became expressions of faith, sorrow, resistance, and hope. These sacred songs preserved African musical traditions while expressing biblical narratives that reflected enslaved peoples lived experiences. More than religious music, spirituals communicated hidden messages, strengthened communities, and affirmed humanity in the face of oppression. This session examines how these remarkable songs became the foundation for much of African American music.
Facilitator: Margareth Miguel is a Brazilian-born professional singer, conductor, vocal coach, and music educator who began her musical studies at age eight. She has performed internationally in concerts, operas, and special events, including with Kentucky Opera and the Louisville Master Chorale in England. Miguel released the album Fina Sintonia and several singles. She serves as Vocal Coach and Musical Director at Sacred Heart School for the Arts and teaches with the Louisville Youth Choir, KCTCS, and Simmons College of Kentucky. An experienced choir director and workshop facilitator, she is currently pursuing a Certification in Vocology at New York University.
